Bishop Auckland Civic Society and Bishop Auckland Town Hall have expressed their appreciation to everyone connected with the Town Quiz and Orchid Show, recently held at the Town Hall. A total of £1,055.50 was raised for the Rebecca Sands appeal.
Of that sum, £194 came from a donation from the Darlington and District and North East Region Orchid Societies, including £70 from Mr Ray Creek, £50 direct from the Societies, and £130 from individuals and visitors to the show.
At the quiz, Rebecca’s mother, Gemma, said, “I would like to thank everyone for their efforts and for helping to raise money for Rebecca. It is very hard to get any help for Rebecca for specialist equipment due to the fact that I work and due to the fact that there is no charity linked to lissencephally, which is the condition that Rebecca has, due to it being so rare. So, unfortunately, it is left to us and our friends and family to fundraise, which as you can appreciate, is very time consuming- but obviously very worthwhile.
“Equipment is very specialist, a car seat is roughly a £1,000, so the efforts that will be put on this evening will help greatly. We obviously don’t know much about Rebecca’s illness, as there are only 2 children in Europe with the genetic condition which has caused the lissencephally- Rebecca being one of them! We do know that Rebecca will have a short life, and that is why we want her to have the best life possible with everything that she needs and the fundraising that you do tonight will help with that.”
A Town Hall spokesperson went on to say, “A total of £861.50 was raised by the Civic Society’s Town Quiz, and we’d particularly like to thank the winning team – Blocki’s Boys – for donating the £50 prize money back to the appeal. A big thank you also to everyone who donated prizes for the raffle, and to Glynn Wales who did a magnificent job as Question Master.”
