At the end of the 2024 outdoor bowls season, Shildon Railway Bowls Club (sponsored by RMH Car Sales) have had a season hallmarked by progression and improvement, reports Jonathan Prince.
The Monday night team finished a commendable 3rd with 11 wins and 2 draws from 18 fixtures. After struggling for players on a Monday, being able to turn a consistent side out each week has made all the difference to performances.
The Tuesday night team finished 4th with 11 wins and a draw from 18 fixtures, defeats only coming to the teams that finished above them.
This is a huge improvement on last year’s league position, and credit must go to everyone who represented the Tuesday night team.
On a Thursday night, our 1st Division team sadly could not find the form to stave off relegation and thus will find themselves in the 2nd Division next season.
The standard in Division 1 is extremely high and whilst disappointing, the calmer waters of the 2nd Division will allow the team to develop their game and bounce back stronger, as they surely will.
Better news for our 2nd Division team who won the league convincingly and are therefore promoted back to the 1st Division with only 3 defeats from 16 games.
The whole of the team deserve a huge pat on the back for performances this season, which in the main have been superb, and rising to the challenge of getting promoted after last year’s disappointment. Well done!
Our Wednesday afternoon Veterans team have finished mid-table and have been extremely competitive despite struggling badly for numbers.
If any gentlemen 55 years or over would like to try something different and spend an afternoon in the sunshine once a week in a competitive team environment, no experience is necessary and all equipment can be provided (though sunshine not guaranteed!).
Congratulations to all of our internal competition winners, not least Andrew Tweddle who won the 4 wood handicap in his first full season, our Vets triples team who won the inaugural Presidents Cup at Spennymoor and to all club members who represented the club and had success in various open events around the North East.
The club officials and selection committee would like to thank Dave Dinsdale at RMH Car Sales and Social Club Secretary Gary Davis for their continued support and all players who have represented the club throughout the season, with a special mention to members of Shildon Railway Cricket Club who gave up their time to play for us when needed.
Greens maintenance and planning for the 2025 season is underway with an open day planned for Spring 2025 – further details to follow!
