Dominant Athletic march on

Action from the Clem Smith Bowl on the new 3G pitch at Whitworth Park Academy.

A dominant second half performance saw Ferryhill Athletic through to the next round of the Clem Smith Bowl as they beat Coxhoe Athletic 4-1 at Whitworth Academy, Spennymoor last weekend, writes Fraser Reynolds.

Although they hit the woodwork and created several chances in the first half, they couldn’t find the back of the net.

On 50 minutes veteran defender Billy Snaith rolled back the years to help Athletic make the breakthrough. After a great run down the right, his pin-point cross found Matthew Agar at the back post and his powerful header put the Athletic in front.

Shortly after, Michael Hogg latched on to a good ball from Tom Olley before outpacing the Coxhoe defence and firing a crisp low shot into the bottom corner.

Coxhoe never stopped battling and only a fine save from Ferryhill’s 18-year-old debutant goalkeeper, Harvey Gunn kept them out.

On 75 minutes Chris Devine added number three before Kieron Richardson was rewarded for an all-action display when he slotted home after the ball came back off the keeper.

In the closing minutes, Coxhoe claimed a consolation goal with a well-placed shot from Wilson.

This Saturday, it is back to league duty for the Athletic with a home match against Durham City, kicking off at 2pm at Dean Bank Recreation Ground.
