Development Teams in Darlington tournament

Shildon AFC Development Centre had team representation at last weekend’s football tournament at a sun drenched Darlington.

This was the first tournament that the youngsters had taken part in, and once they got the nerves out of the way, the U13 team did the centre proud.

With the teams placed in 2 groups, Shildon had 3 matches to play, 2 against teams from higher divisions, and the third against a team who had beaten Shildon home and away last season.

The first match of the group involved Shildon and Mount Pleasant Reds.

Having conceded an early goal, Shildon fought hard but were unable to level the match against a strong physical team.

The second match saw the lads take on Darlington Spraire Lads, and again conceded the first goal.

However, they managed to level things up with a great goal by Adam Campbell, who latched on to a through ball and slotted it past the keeper.

Unfortunately parity didn’t last long as Spraire Lads scored a late goal to clinch the points.

The final group match involved Redcar Town, who were looking to complete a triple success in the season.

Redcar followed the pattern from the other matches by scoring a first half goal.

However, Shildon came out for the second half and produced some great football to level the scores through Jack Mortimer.

Determined to produce a good result, Shildon pressed hard and got their rewards with a superb finish from Alex Lamb.

The team saw the match out for a great win, and despite not progressing to the semi final stage, the team were justifiably proud of their three performances.

The squad was Niall Higham, Ethan Smith, Jack Mortimer, Adam Campbell, Sam Matthews, Alex Lamb, Jack Comerford, Tom Andelin, Kane Smith and Blake Milner.

As always, the Development Centre is keen to welcome new players and supporters for the 2013/14 season, especially in the U9 age group (school year 3 & 4) to continue the youth development in the town.

Anyone interested in joining the junior teams should go along to training sessions at the Scouts Field in West Road (Thursdays at 5.30pm / Saturdays at 9.30am) or contact Phil on 07870 554988.
