Crafty cakes crowning glory for hospice

St Theresa’s Charity Shop in Church Street have shown that creating an award-winning window display can be a piece of cake!

Staff and volunteers at the shop, which has been raising funds for St Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington for over 25 years, came up with an original display to represent hospice care, with a unique creation being the star attraction.

Irene Smith, a friend of shop manager Edith Charlton, donated an expertly crafted, hand-knitted afternoon tea set, complete with cakes, biscuits and savouries which all looked good enough to eat!

The donation was the centrepiece of the display which highlighted the ways in which items sold at the shop directly affect individuals receiving care at the Hospice.

The team were challenged to come up with an idea to mark Hospice Care Week, a national campaign to raise awareness of the inspiring work that hospices do across the UK.

Edith said: “We were thrilled to win the award. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the display. We hope it showed people how we look after our patients, and really make them feel good when they come into the Hospice, with lots of different services, therapies – and good food – which all helps.”

The theme for Hospice Care Week 2015 was Connecting Care and the window display was used to represent the special role St Teresa’s Hospice plays in connecting with individuals and families, connecting with local communities and connecting people with each other.

The shop was presented with a certificate and, appropriately, cakes for the team, after their window display was voted to be the best.

Retail Manager Marjorie McIntyre said: “All ten of our St Teresa’s charity shops took part in the window display competition to mark Hospice Care Week. All came up with inventive and eye-catching themes but it was our Shildon shop which was judged the cream of the crop. Thanks to all the staff and volunteers for their outstanding efforts. Special congratulations to the Shildon team who came up with such a mouth-watering entry.’’
