Ferryhill Athletic got back to winning ways after a midweek 1-2 home defeat to Belmont, with a 3-1 win over local rivals Coxhoe Athletic at Dean Bank on Saturday, writes Chris Orton. Athletic were by far the dominant team in the game, and it is to be hoped that the good form continues going into September.
Athletic took the initiative from the off with the lively Chris Dodds shooting over early on with the team playing fluid passing football and demonstrating a level of confidence that had perhaps been lacking in midweek.
The Coxhoe keeper then made a great save from Chris Devine, before the visitors had a chance that was well saved by Luke Teare in the home goal. Alex Quinn inexplicably missed a sitter before then going on to force an incredible save from the impressive Coxhoe keeper, Jake Burns. Dodds had another shot kept out too shortly before Ferryhill were awarded a penalty that was ably converted by the impressive Devine.
The second half continued in the same fashion and Devine doubled his tally a few seconds into the half. Kieron Richardson, who worked tirelessly throughout the game, hitting the post before firing over the bar.
Jay Roddam also played well, creating a number of chances with his pacy play. And the returning Alfie Backhouse worked hard too when he appeared from the bench, firing a shot over the crossbar before the Coxhoe keeper again came to their rescue when he saved another of his efforts. The opposition halved the deficit against the run of play when Peter Brown converted, but Ferryhill finished them off when Richardson finally got the reward his play deserved, blasting a shot past Burns to seal the three points.
Ferryhill, who currently top the table on goal difference from Willington AFC, continue in the league with their final midweek game for now, when they visit FC Hartlepool Reserves as this issue of the Chapter goes to press.
It’s then a wait of ten days before Athletic play again, when they will be hosting Chester Le Street Utd Reserves at Dean Bank on 14 September.
