At this year’s Chilton Town Council community grants awards evening, local groups gathered to celebrate funding given to projects supporting residents of all ages.
These grants are made possible because town councillors agree to give up their annual allowance and donate the money to the community.
The evening was also an opportunity to recognise the work of former town councillor, Eric Campbell, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
His wife, Joyce, was in attendance to hear a heartfelt tribute to everything Eric achieved in Chilton as a councillor, from chair of the sports and social club, to school governor and dedicated supporter of Chilton grassroots football.
Town Mayor, Cllr Sue Reece paid tribute to Eric alongside the grant recipients.
In her speech, she commented on how appreciative the council is of the work being done by the organisers of Chilton Juniors FC, Chilton 1st Scouts, Chi Chilton Taekwondo, Chilton Executioners, and How We Roll, noting how they make a real difference to residents, particularly to the younger members of the Chilton community.
Grants were also awarded to the Chilton Community Fund for the over 60’s Harvest Festival and the Chilton Sports, Social, and Community Club and Gym for the annual Christmas party and to repair equipment for community use.
Although they were unable to attend the evening, they picked up their cheques later in the week.
In addition to celebrating community groups, special thanks was given to Jimmy Houlihan and Pam Herbert who both retired as councillors this year.
A warm tribute was also paid to Alison Smith, who retires from her role as support officer later this month.
Grants have closed for 2026, but application will open in May 2027 for next year.
