Well known Bishop Auckland resident, Betty Brown of West Road, is overjoyed after a Town Councillor came to her rescue.
Betty, 78, who finds walking difficult, bought herself an electric scooter to make herself more mobile. Imagine her disappointment, however, when she realised she couldn’t use her scooter because the kerb from her gate to the road was far too high.
She rang Durham County Council in November and asked them for help to drop the kerb. They assured her that it would be sorted, but she heard nothing more.
In despair, she contacted Councillor Sam Zair who put the wheels in motion, so to speak. He arranged for the council to come out, but they said there was nothing left in the budget this year to pay for the work to be carried out. So Sam agreed to pay for the changes from his ‘Highways Budget’.
Two weeks ago, the council dropped the kerb, which came to around £500 and Betty is now a very happy lady.
Betty is the lovely lady who worked for Manners the Butchers in Newgate Street for 45 years.
