Following some recent contact between Ferryhill Town Council and East Durham College, who are currently working on their Supported Internship Programme for 2025-2026, the Town Council have been able to offer a work placement to one of East Durham Colleges learners.
Leon Taylor, who is 19 years old, is currently engaged with the Supported Internships programme offered by East Durham College and is now ready to gain some experience in the workplace.
Leon will be joining the Town Council initially for two afternoons per week to work in the council’s outside areas. During his initial work experience, Leon will primarily be working alongside staff in Duncombe Cemetery and Dean Bank Park.
Speaking about the opportunity, Leon said: “I’m really excited to start my placement with Ferryhill Town Council.
“I really want to work, and this is a great chance for me to learn new skills, gain experience in the workplace, and build my confidence.
“I’m looking forward to working with the team and getting involved in different projects.”
Angela Aitchison, Leon’s Supported Internship Job Coach added: “We are absolutely thrilled that Ferryhill Town Council are partnering with us to support our Supported Internship Programme.
“By offering Leon this placement, they are not only giving him the chance to learn and grow in a real workplace, but they are also showing a fantastic commitment to inclusion and to creating opportunities for young people with additional needs.
“These experiences change lives, and with Leon’s enthusiasm and determination, I know this will be a really positive journey for both him and the Town Council.”
Leeanne Owens, Town Clerk for Ferryhill Town Council said: “Leon is a very enthusiastic young man, and the Town Council are looking to forward to having Leon on board.
“I hope that Leon’s experience with the Town Council is a positive one and one that allows him to gain the work experience needed.”
Supported Internships are vital to bridging the employment gap between disabled and non-disabled people and the programme that East Durham College deliver is exceptional.
