Openers, Ash Raine (107 not out) and Michael Lumley (115) took Shildon Railway 2nd team to 246 for 1 in their 40 overs, as they overcame Etherley to take second spot in the Darlington District Cricket League Division C, reports John Brennan. In brilliant sunshine at SecuriCorp Park, Shildon enjoyed taking advantage of some poor bowling before two wickets each for Nathan Lawson and James O’Neill saw the visitors reach 199 for 6 in reply.
Meanwhile, a below strength 1st XI lost out at Barnard Castle, despite 86 from Greg Upton and 47 from Ryan Nangle. Shildon put the home side into bat, and they progressed steadily to 245 for 8 in their 50 overs. Joe Knowles, with 4 for 59 was the pick of the bowlers. Shildon’s reply got off to a bad start when Steve Forster was run out with only five runs on the board. The Railwaymen have seen how opposition teams bat stubbornly down the order and use up the allotted overs, but they fail to do so themselves and their innings collapsed from 187 for 4, to 209 all out, in under 40 overs. Overall, it was a very disappointing batting display and Shildon drop to fifth place in the division.
Saturday sees the 1st XI at local rivals Newton Aycliffe in the North Yorks & South Durham Premier Cricket League Division 2 encounter, whilst the 2nd XI entertains Northallerton, at SecuriCorp Park. As the Crier goes to press, the 1st team is at home to Barnard Castle in the 100 Cup.
Meanwhile, the cricket club was also delighted to mount an advertising board from the Town Crier – its latest sponsor – at the ground during the week. Archie MacKay, Editor of South West Durham News CIC, which publishes the Crier, said: “We are equally delighted and proud to sponsor Shildon Railway Cricket Club and it is wonderful to see our advertising board mounted at the club. As we develop our growth strategy, local sponsorship is one way in which we hope to give back to the community we serve. This is hopefully the first of many projects we will be supporting across all of our publications in the coming months and years.”
