As it is National Volunteer Week, it is quite appropriate that recognition has been bestowed upon Carol Fletcher from Dale Road, Shildon, for the voluntary work she has carried out for the Shildon community over the last 14 years.
In 2000, John Smith, Editor of the Town Crier, encouraged Carol to get involved with the Community Safety Group, and in 2004 she became treasurer of the Shildon Safety Group. She also takes the minutes for Shildon pub-watch and is the chairperson for Thickley PACT meetings.
Every Thursday morning Carol visits Timothy Hackworth School where she reads with the pupils and two mornings a week she works at Shildon Police Station, where she deals with members of the public to reassure them and keep them informed and updated.
Last year she was nominated for ‘Volunteer of the Year – Durham Constabulary’ by Alex Clarke, ex sergeant at Shildon Police Station. The current sergeant, Tim Kelly, has reiterated the same views, saying her work is very special. He said “Carol is an intricate part of the work carried out in our office and she is a wonderful asset to have. She is a credit to the volunteer scheme”.
Carol, nee Urwin, was born in Dale Road and she still lives in the same street. In early times she worked for Aycliffe Development Corporation in charge of the office machine room, and later worked for Dr. Velangi for 16 years. In 1989 she spent time at Mill Street Post Office until she retired in 1994.
Carol said, “After I left work I got the chance to do some volunteering work to give something back to the community I love, and I have loved every minute of it.
“I am working with a wonderful team at Shildon Police Station and they have made me really welcome and this certificate is really appreciated”.
