A group of Spennymoor veterans recently went to one of the town’s residential care homes to hold a veterans’ breakfast with a couple of it’s residents who had previously served in the armed forces.
The event, which took place on Saturday, 19 October at Lothian House, had been jointly organised by a County Councillor and the care home’s Senior Home Manager after the Councillor had learnt that one of the resident’s wanted to attend a veterans’ breakfast.
Lothian House residents George Robson, a D-Day veteran who served in the Royal Navy and Heather Ashford, who served in the Women’s Royal Air Force, were joined by fourteen veterans.
They enjoyed talking about their respective previous military service with their fellow veterans.
Councillor Pete Molloy said, “I heard that Mr Robson had wanted to attend one of the Spennymoor Veterans’ Breakfast Club’s organised breakfasts in Wetherspoons, but it would not have been practical for him attend.
“I thought it would be a good idea to take a group of veterans to the care home if it was possible, so I contacted the care home’s manger who was happy to get involved.”
To show their appreciation for the hospitality they received from the staff of Lothian House, the veterans had a collection for the residents activities and presented Syliva Price, Activities Co-ordinator with £65.00.
The Senior Home Manager of Lothian House, Jill Barlow said, “We feel very privileged and delighted that our offer to host the Veterans breakfast was accepted and attended by so many.
“As a care home serving the local community, it is vital that we maintain our community links to support our residents to continue to feel a sense of belonging,”
Speaking on behalf of the veterans, Cllr Molloy added, “The veterans really enjoyed visiting both George and Heather and we’d like to thank the staff at Lothian House for their hard work in caring for their residents, Jill for facilitating the event and Sylvia for her hospitality.”
The next meeting of the Spennymoor Veterans’ Breakfast Club will be held at 11am on Saturday, 2 November, in Wetherspoons, Spennymoor.
