Cable Thieves Down Power

Almost 2,000 homes in Bishop Auckland and the surrounding area were left without electricity after vandals downed power on Monday, April 12th.

Witnesses reported seeing a series of flashes and a loud crackling noise near Coundon at around 9.00pm.

Durham Constabulary have stated that a number of men were seen throwing metal chains at the overhead wires. After buckling under the weight, the cables fell on to trees and bushes, setting them alight.

A blackout ensued, and some 1,879 homes and businesses were left without electricity. Firefighters and NEDL engineers were quick to deal with the situation.

Police warned that the criminals put their lives in real danger and are treating the incident as criminal damage. In light of a recent spate of metal thefts, it is suspected that the culprits were attempting to down the wires in order to steal the metal.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call Durham Constabulary on 0345 60 60 365 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
