A well known group of locals and members of Elm Road Club who cycle for charity have completed their latest fundraising venture, after pedalling from Edinburgh to Shildon over three days.
The BERCS, or the Boys of Elm Road Cycling Society, consist of local businessman and chairman of Shildon Football Club, Brian Burn; Peter Wild; Gary Scott; Ian Wickins; Neil Franklin; Graham Coley; John Haines and Mark Lowry.
After catching the train from Darlington to Edinburgh, the group were on their way out of the Scottish capital within an hour as they made for Berwick at the end of stage one – a route which included one uphill cycle of five miles.
A successful night’s fundraising in local pubs was followed by the second stage to Whitley Bay and a second evening of fundraising and refreshments.
The lads, who finished their 150-mile adventure by mid-afternoon of day three, offered their thanks to Blue Diamond Machine Tools for accommodation, John Haines for transport and to all who donated along the route, particularly Berwick and Whitley Bay pub-goers who gave over £500.
The group hope to raise up to £6,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
