Developing Chilton’s Neighbourhood Plan 2025-2035 provides a great opportunity for children and young people to be “Changemakers for Chilton”, writes Cllr Sue Reece, to have their say on what works, what needs improvement and, by using their motivation and creativity, help make a positive difference for everyone living in Chilton.
The survey asks what they feel is important, will help them to live healthy, happy lives and to take care of our environment. Does Chilton have good outdoor spaces, places to play and hang out and spend time with friends and family? Are there things missing? It is easy to walk, wheel and cycle to get where they need to go and, do they have access to nature? All of which contribute to good mental health and wellbeing.
We also want to know if our young people think Chilton is clean and looked after, are there significant buildings and spaces and do they feel safe? If not, how we can make things better? Very importantly, do they feel proud of where they live?
How to get involved –
There are two versions of survey, based on a toolkit development by Play Scotland; the Children’s Survey is aimed at age 6-12 (very young users might need a parent, carer, teacher or facilitator to help complete) and the Young People’s survey for those aged 12 and over.
Changemakers can write the answers in the spaces provided or record their view in other ways, for example do a drawing, take photos, make a video or model. The survey can also we completed as part of a facilitated group activity.
If as a parent, carer, teacher or group facilitator and you would like to know more about the survey or to arrange a workshop for your group or club, please contact Sue Reece or Anne Hall, Neighbourhood Plan Leads, by emailing neighbourhoodplan[@]chiltondurham-tc[.]gov[.]uk, or by calling 01388 721788.
Hard copies of all surveys are available from Chiton Town Council, Hutton House or down loadable from https://chiltondurham-tc.gov.uk.
