When the Great North Air Ambulance Service helicopter had to land in a residential area of Shildon recently, the incident prompted one local resident to begin a fundraising effort for the service.
“A massive crowd of people gathered round and I thought to myself, if everyone here gave just 50p each, we’d probably raise hundreds of pounds for this service,” said Barbara Warrior, who lives yards from where the Air Ambulance landed at Larch Avenue.
Just days after the incident, Barbara was visting her mother’s home where a car crash again necessitated the use of the Air Ambulance.
“It just goes to show how vital a service they provide,” said Barbara.
Harriet Langston, Public Liaison Officer at GNAAS, said: “We would like to thank Barbara for the funds she has raised following the incidents close to her and her family. Donations like this from members of the public help us to raise the £4.5 million each year to keep us operating our three aircraft and saving lives across the region.”
