Baccanalia celebrate successful Stronger Towns bid

The Inaugural Bishop Auckland Pride is the latest festival organised by Baccanalia.

Social Enterprise, Baccanalia has secured funding from the Stronger Towns Fund. The transformative grant will empower the Bishop Auckland-based organisation to amplify its impact within the community by bringing an exciting array of inclusive, vibrant events to the town.

Acting as a cornerstone for local communities across County Durham, Baccanalia’s street food markets are becoming renowned for their ability to breathe life into town centres, car parks, and market squares. The events not only showcase local produce and culinary talents but inject vitality into the local economy while fostering a sense of togetherness among residents.

With the support of the Stronger Towns Fund, Baccanalia is poised to build on its successful track record and diversify its offerings to include dynamic ventures such as Bishop Auckland PRIDE, Family Festival, and Christmas Town.

David Land, Chair of the Stronger Towns Board said: “We are delighted to support Baccanalia’s exciting programme of events in Bishop Auckland which will enhance the town’s growing reputation as a regional event destination.

“Baccanalia’s collaborative and inclusive approach delivers the high-quality social and artistic experiences that brings the community together and visitors to the town.”

Founder and director of Baccanalia, Thomas Wales added: “This funding marks a significant moment for us. It provides the opportunity to expand our event portfolio for Bishop Auckland, enabling us to continue fostering a sense of community while keeping our events as accessible as possible.

“While we strive to keep our events free, the reality is that producing them requires support, and this funding ensures that we can maintain affordability and inclusivity.”

The latest addition to the Baccanalia events portfolio is Bishop Auckland PRIDE, a brand new initiative championing inclusivity and diversity, with Bishop Auckland College at its heart.

Students will lead the charge, gaining invaluable skills of event management and logistics. As well as music performances, dance parties, and stalls offering food and crafts, there’ll be talks, educational workshops and healthcare.

Last year’s Bishop Auckland Christmas Town, co-produced by Baccanalia and Bridge Creative, attracted 11,000 visitors.

This year, thanks to the Stronger Towns Fund, the event will span an extended duration of 10 days, aligning perfectly with The Auckland Project’s enchanting festive light trail, Aglow.

Together, these initiatives position Bishop Auckland as a premier destination for the festive holiday season, promising a magical experience for both locals and visitors alike.
