Shildon Town Council hosted the first ever baby pop up event at the town council offices last week. The event was well attended by over 25 expectant and new mothers and their families.
The baby bank project has been operating from the town council offices for well over a year. Initially the town council identified a need for the project from families visiting the office seeking support.
As it already had a well-established school uniform swap shop and winter coat project available to residents, the council decided to add the baby bank to help support the community.
The project is visited on a daily basis by parents and families requiring items such as nappies and clothing and is an excellent project helping the environment by recycling preloved clothing.
The council has recently partnered up with Shildon Alive, supporting the town and its residents, to provide nappies and sanitary products to those families in need.
“The project has cost nothing as all preloved clothing are donations received from kind local residents and local knitters,” said a town council spokesperson, “and without their help this project wouldn’t be possible.”
Any cash donations received throughout the project and from yesterday’s pop-up event goes back into the baby bank by purchasing new items such as baby bottles and other essential items.
