Athletic return to winning ways

Action from Ferryhill’s 3-1 weekend win over Belmont at New Ferens Park.

Ferryhill Athletic put in a fantastic team display when they ran out 3-1 winners over Belmont at New Ferens Park on Saturday, reports Chris Orton.

The whole team worked incredibly hard for each other throughout the game and gained a well-deserved three points.

From the start, Ferryhill were on the attack with Matthew Agar having two good chances early on but firing over the bar.

Against the run of play, the home side took the lead twenty minutes into the first half, when Sol Tones latched onto a ball after a rushed clearance and slotted home.

The setback seemed to galvanise Athletic however, who stepped up a gear and following some superb play, Kieron Richardson got the equaliser.

Ferryhill were dominating thoroughly and they got a penalty after 37 minutes, which Richardson slotted home.

The second half was a triumph for Ferryhill who played well throughout with every player on the field working hard to support each other.

Jay Roddam had an excellent shot very well saved by Ridley in the Belmont goal, who also kept out a headed attempt from Agar.

Belmont offered little by this point and pressure from Ferryhill resulted in Richardson getting his hat-trick after 63 minutes.

To compound the misery for the home side, they had a man sent off for a foul on Richardson who had been put through and was set to score his fourth.

The game was a real return to form for Ferryhill and a pleasure to watch.

It would have been hard work for any player to be judged man of the match, but Reece Wilkinson took the award.

Ferryhill play Newton Aycliffe YFC Senior this Saturday (29 March) at Oakleaf Playing Fields. Kick-off time is 2.30pm.
