Following their incredible 13-1 victory in midweek against Gateshead Lean Rangers Reserves, a depleted Ferryhill Athletic squad travelled over to Wynyard where they faced Wolviston in their fourth league game of the season, reports Chris Orton.
In very pleasant surroundings, Athletic gained their fourth win on the trot, returning home three goals to the good and with a clean sheet into the bargain, not that it was an easy game by any stretch of the imagination.
Wolviston provided a much sterner test than the previous opponents and made Ferryhill work hard to the end. The teams were equally matched for much of the game, with Wolviston a constant threat.
Both sides created chances, with Alex Quinn shooting wide for the away side early on. Wolviston then went on to hit the crossbar, before Athletic were awarded a penalty which was converted by spot-kick maestro Adam Morland.
Matthew Agar then went close before finding himself controversially sin-binned.
Wolviston went on the attack from the off in the second half, but keeper Harvey Gunn was in fine form to prevent them from scoring.
Wolviston were the better team for a while and Gunn needed to produce a man of the match performance to keep the score at zero.
Athletic kept pressing and captain Kieron Richardson had a good chance before a second penalty was awarded, and duly dispensed, by Morland.
Wolviston kept battling and never let their heads drop, but it was all over when Richardson got the third in the 91st minute.
New signing Luke Teare was given some game time in goal and handled the ball extremely well.
Ferryhill sit proudly at the top of the Wearside League First Division table but there are going to be some tough matches coming up as other teams seek to topple them from the position.
Next up for Athletic is a trip to Bowburn to face New Durham AFC in a midweek league game as the Chapter goes to press, followed by the visit of mid-table Barnard Castle to Dean Bank Rec on Saturday.
