Re-formed Ferryhill Athletic achieved the first silverware of the new era when they won the Clem Smith Bowl at Dean Bank Park against a tough Durham City side, reports Chris Orton.
A large, enthusiastic crowd filled the ground and the home fans supported their team gamely throughout. It was a difficult first half for Athletic as they faced a determined Durham side whose keeper was in terrific form. Matthew Agar shot over the bar early on and Kieron Richardson had a number of chances, but was unable to find the net. A defensive mix-up led to Durham taking the lead after 18 minutes, but Ferryhill kept battling throughout the half. Durham looked a much better side than the last time Ferryhill faced them and kept Athletic on their toes. Chris Dodds had a goal disallowed for offside before the interval, and Athletic went into the break 1-0 down.
Into the second half and Ferryhill showed more steel. Dodds got the equaliser on 65 minutes, and the introduction of Louis Anderson and Chris Devine added some much needed pace to the attack. Neither side was able to break the deadlock, however and the game went to penalties. Athletic tucked away four of theirs, and Durham could only manage one in reply, with Ferryhill keeper Harvey Gunn in fine form.
The celebrations began right after the game, with officials from the Wearside League presenting the teams with individual trophies and the Clem Smith Bowl itself to captain Tom Olley. The victory left a definite feel-good factor in the ground and it is to be hoped that it leads to greater things.
It all starts again in July when Athletic begin their pre-season preparations for the 2024-25 season.
