Ferryhill bowed out of the Shipowner’s Cup on Saturday following a 2-1 loss to Pools Youth FC, after two missed penalties from Athletic and some questionable refereeing decisions, writes Chris Orton.
In windy conditions, Athletic were awarded a penalty after just a minute, but Kieron Richardson’s shot was well saved by Rundle in the home goal.
Athletic can feel aggrieved that the opposition didn’t have a man sent off as the penalty was because last man Matthew Agar was clearly held back by the Hartlepool defender.
Athletic had a good spell for the first twenty minutes, with Tyler Brown going close and Agar shooting wide of the post.
Finlay Colwell was on fine form in the Athletic goal and made two great saves in quick succession.
Ferryhill had most of the play for a while but Pools Youth fought back and took the lead when their shot unluckily went in off the back of a Ferryhill defender’s head.
The second half began much as the first had ended with Pools Youth dominating proceedings.
Colwell again made another great save as Athletic began to give the ball away easily.
This would come back to haunt the away side as Pools let off a shot that just crept past Colwell in the Athletic goal to make it 2-0.
Ferryhill got a goal back soon after when Kyle Quinn’s low header landed in the Pools net.
Brown worked well to have a shot saved by the impressive home keeper and went on to earn a second penalty for Ferryhill. Unfortunately, the Pools keeper repeated his heroics from the first half and again saved it.
Athletic stepped up a gear and began to apply pressure as the game progressed and the returning Reece Wilkinson made an impressive display when he was introduced from the bench.
Sadly, despite battling hard for the last fifteen minutes, including further efforts from Agar and Kyle Quinn Ferryhill were unable to convert to take the game to penalties and the home side ultimately progressed to the next round.
Ferryhill next move on to a league game with local rivals Brandon United, as the Chapter goes to print, at the Welfare Ground in Brandon and kick-off is 7.45pm.
