Durham County Council has indicated that the new consultation on the potential demolition of Shildon’s Millennium Arches will begin on 26th September and is expected to last a month.
Meanwhile, the Save Our Arches campaign group has been busy collecting signatures for its petition throughout the summer.
“Its been a long summer break,” said a spokesperson, “but we have been hard at work gathering signatures. We now have over 1,000 people who have said they do not want the arches demolished – more than 10 percent of Shildon’s population.
“Contrast that with DCC’s original consultation in which officials claim that 32 people – a figure we dispute – said they wanted the arches removed.
Please visit our Facebook page, Save our Arches, where we will be announcing further initiatives very soon.”
