Don’t miss a display by Durham Amateur Football Trust on show at Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon from Monday 6th January to Friday 7th February.
High employment in the 1950s corresponded with the ‘Golden Age’ of amateur football in South West Durham, with thousands of fans flocking onto trains at Crook Town and Bishop Auckland stations to see their beloved teams playing in front of sell out crowds at Wembley Stadium.
Industry and amateur football have long gone hand-in-hand in the region, through boom and bust, growth and decline. This exhibition plots that journey through 100 years of North East heritage, from the birth of the Northern League in 1889 to the last ever FA Amateur Cup Final in 1974.
Durham Amateur Football Trust’s latest exhibition explores these themes.
The museum is open daily from 10am to 4pm, with free admission and free parking.
