Shildon Railway CC 1st XI need just three points from their two remaining games to be assured of the North Yorks & South Durham Premiere Cricket League Division 3 title.
The leaders took 20 points from their game at Maltby on Saturday, in the warm September sunshine. Maltby fielded only ten men and put up some resistance in 42.3 overs, making 117 for 9.
Shildon survived early trouble by the endeavours of Adam Jenkin (32 not out) and Peter Stanwix (37 not out) to win by seven wickets inside 23 overs.
On Saturday the Railwaymen look to secure the championship when they entertain Thornaby at the Sportsfield, starting at 12.30pm.
On Sunday the 2nd team went down, at home, to Billingham Synthonia but are still hopeful of a top five finish, with one game to go.
Only Adam Bayles (62) looked comfortable against the visitors swing attack, as six Shildon batsmen failed to score and Ul Haq ran riot with 7 for 31.
Billingham lost four wickets in reaching the winning total.
Next Sunday the 2nd team completes its fixtures for the season with a visit to Yarm, the game starts at 1pm.
The senior players’ Annual Presentation Night will be held at the B.R. at 7.30pm on Saturday 3rd October.
