2013 was a fantastic year for local gymnast Mia Scott, culminating in her selection for the Great Britain Development Squad for 2014. Mia, aged 10, who attends St John’s C of E Aided primary school in Shildon, trains for over 20 hours a week at the ‘Pink Ladies’ South Durham Gymnastics Club in Spennymoor.
The year started with a silver medal in the Level 3 Regional Compulsory competition, which secured Mia a place at the National Compulsory Finals in Birmingham in April, where she had a great competition and ranked 11th overall. A win at the Manchester Open in June was next, followed by the Level 3 Regional Voluntary competition where another gold medal performance qualified Mia for the National Voluntary Finals in Guildford. More success was achieved with gold in the Pink Ladies Invitational at her home gym, before moving on to the final competition of the year in Guildford in November. After a tremendous display on all apparatus, Mia secured a fantastic result finishing in 4th place overall. This result, when combined with her score from the Compulsory Finals earlier in the year, ranked Mia as 4th best gymnast in the country for her age group. This means that she is now a proud member of the Great Britain Development Squad for 2014, and will attend training sessions throughout the year at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre with the rest of the Great Britain gymnastics team.
