Palatial Prelates: House of Bishops of Durham – Ferryhill History Society Talk

March 27, 2024 @ 7:30 pm
£2

This month’s meeting of the Ferryhill History Society will take place at Ferryhill Station Working Men’s Club at 7:30pm on Wednesday 27 March.

The speaker will be Dr Richard Pears with his talk Palatial Prelates: Houses of the Bishops of Durham.

The Bishops of Durham ruled the Palatinate of Durham for nearly 1,000 years.

They had houses in Yorkshire, Northumberland and London, as well as their castles at Durham and Bishop Auckland. These palaces were extended and rebuilt through the centuries to demonstrate the Bishops wealth and power, as highlighted in this talk.

Dr Pears is a librarian at Durham University and is the author of articles on country houses in the North East, and a member of several history and architecture groups.

There is a cover charge of £2 and all are welcome to go along.
