Building’s future undecided

The future of one of the town’s most historic buildings is currently hanging in the balance as the results of a feasibility study draw closer.

The Laurel Building, formerly part of King James I Grammar School, has stood empty for over ten years, and was targeted by arsonists in 2007, who destroyed much of the first floor.

A campaign is currently being led by Town Councillor Barbara Laurie to save the 145 year-old building, which has connections to comedian Stan Laurel.

Members of the public can sign a petition to save the building in the Four Clocks Centre in Newgate Street.
