Sedgefield Water Polo Club sent a young development team to Maltby Leisure Centre recently for a friendly match against Rotherham, reports Paul Taylor. For some members, this was their first experience of representing the club since joining us as beginners in our level 8 sessions and so excitement levels were very high.
Everyone was looking forward to the experience that the game would bring. The game was full of excitement from start to finish, with Jasper making his debut appearance in goal. Everyone had a lot of fun and we’d like to thank the coaches at Maltby for taking time to pause the game at certain points to explain to the new members what was going well and what they needed to do to improve in specific circumstances. The final score was a very well deserved 10-10.
Coach Carole Shaw was delighted with the outcome of the match, explaining how our team took control of the game from beginning and worked well together as a team using skills that they had learnt from their club training sessions. Thanks also go to the coaches and parents for making the long drive to Maltby.
Meanwhile, the club would like to congratulate John Pratt who was selected to represent Great Britain’s Senior Men and travelled to Romania earlier this year in March to participate in the World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup B Division Continental tournament. The event was held in Otopeni, Romania, with Great Britain facing Ukraine, Germany, Malta and Romania. We are proud to say that John was the joint top goal scorer for GB.
In addition to Junior and Senior sessions, Sedgefield Water Polo Club now offers a beginner session on a Saturday afternoon for those wishing to try this fun and exciting sport. We are also looking for more females to come and join our club so that we can have our own ladies team in future years.
