A small grant of £1,008 has been awarded to Endeavour Woodcrafts to get fighting fit in Ferryhill.
Endeavour was set up in 1992 as a day service for adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues. It provides education and learning in woodworking and arts and crafts.

People who use the project have now returned after months of pandemic restrictions, and the team noticed that many have had little or no physical activity during this time. The project has teamed up with local Ferryhill boxing academy, Seconds Out, to help its service users become more physically active and improve their mental health.

A grant was awarded from the Durham County Council Culture and Sport Fund to cover costs over a 16-week period to transport people to and from the sessions. Each week participants will be given the chance to take part in an exciting workout. The sessions have been adjusted to suit wheelchair access and tailored for each individual. The team will record charts of the increasing physical fitness levels achieved to help people monitor their progress. At the end of each session, water and fruit will be on offer, followed by a chat about the importance of eating a healthy diet along with feedback and the chance to ask questions.

The project will aim to reduce stress and blood pressure. At the same time, the team hopes it will strengthen friendships and educate people who use the project about the value of a healthy lifestyle. A professional boxer will be invited into the group to motivate and inspire them and everyone who takes part will receive a certificate.

A spokesperson for Endeavour Woodcrafts said: “We have gratefully received funding from CDCF for a four-months Fighting Fit course held at Seconds Out Boxing Academy, Ferryhill and hosted by Paul Eddy.
“The group are really enjoying this weekly fitness programme.”
