Darlington’s much‑loved Community Carnival, a fixture in the town’s calendar since 1983 and a proud successor to the historic Railway Carnival, is embarking on an exciting new adventure for 2026. After more than four decades based in Stanhope Park, the Carnival Committee has charted a new course, bringing this year’s festivities to the railway‑rich landscape of Hopetown Darlington.

The decision to relocate has been made by the Darlington Community Carnival Committee, ensuring the future of the event stays on the right line and ensuring it continues to flourish while maintaining its strong roots in the town’s cultural heritage.

This year, the Carnival takes inspiration from the classic tale Around the World in 80 Days, inviting visitors to join a global voyage of imagination, creativity and colour, all within a setting symbolic of journeys, locomotion and discovery.

This Carnival will begin with a traditional, vibrant procession departing North Lodge Park and travelling through the Denes area of the town like a colourful locomotive, before arriving at its new festival site on Foundry Green at Hopetown Darlington.

The Carnival will take place on Saturday 27 June 2026, from 10am to 5pm.

Hopetown Darlington, the town’s railway‑themed heritage attraction, offers a fitting backdrop for the Carnival’s next journey, celebrating community spirit on a site that reflects Darlington’s pioneering place in railway history and the birth of the modern railway.

This year’s Carnival will also support the Arthur Wharton Foundation as its chosen charity for 2026. The Arthur Wharton Foundation celebrates the pioneering life and legacy of Arthur Wharton, recognised as the world’s first Black professional footballer, and works to promote equality, diversity and inclusion through sport, education and community engagement. The charity has been selected to coincide with a new exhibition at Hopetown Darlington exploring the extraordinary life, achievements and enduring legacy of Arthur Wharton, further connecting the Carnival’s journey of discovery with Darlington’s rich social and cultural history.

John Howarth, Head of the Darlington Community Carnival Committee, said: “Darlington Community Carnival has always been carried forward by the strength and spirit of local people, and as we look to the future, we felt it was time to switch points and chart a new journey, and what better theme than ‘Around the World in 80 Days’? Our move to Hopetown Darlington gives us the perfect departure point, rich with the railway heritage that has always powered our town’s identity.

The decision to change location was made by the Carnival Committee after much careful thought, and we’re confident this new platform will help the event grow, thrive and inspire for years to come. We’re excited to welcome everyone aboard for what promises to be a landmark year.”

Once at Hopetown Darlington, visitors can enjoy a vibrant programme of performances, community activities and themed attractions. Among the highlights will be a special ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ exhibition in the Stores, created by local schools and artists, transforming the historic industrial space into an imaginative voyage across continents, cultures and creativity.

Mike Crawshaw, Head of Heritage and Culture at Darlington Borough Council, said: “Darlington’s railway story is world‑famous, and Hopetown Darlington embodies that spirit of adventure, innovation and connection – values that align perfectly with this year’s Carnival theme. While the decision to relocate rests with the Carnival Committee, we’re delighted to host and support an event that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots and bringing the community together in such a creative way. We look forward to welcoming the procession as it steams into its new destination.”

Community groups, traders, and organisations wishing to book a stall can reserve their place by emailing Stalls[@]darlingtoncommunitycarnival[.]org[.]uk

The Carnival, both the procession and the festival, are free to attend. The festival inside the grounds of Hopetown Darlington will be ticketed. Tickets will be released via the Hopetown Darlington website in the coming weeks.
