Five members from the Shildon Ignite group took part in a litter pick to fundraise for their Greener Shildon project on Saturday 13th June.

The litter pick took place in the new and developing community forest at the top of Middridge Lane.

The group, with members from Year 5 to college age, meet on a monthly basis to devise ideas on ways to improve Shildon.

They recently ran the Operation Aspiration poster project, and the Greener Shildon project is their latest brain child.

They plan to run a competition through the summer to have children and young people come up with bin designs.

The winning designs will then be placed on the existing bins to try and encourage everyone to dispose of their litter appropriately.

They also plan to run workshops with invited guest groups to try and encourage people to use bins more.

The litter pick was undertaken on behalf of Shildon Community Woodland and the event was supported by Durham County Council and Shildon Town Council.

Naomi Tomlinson, the group co-ordinator said, “I’m very proud of the young people who joined the litter pick, they did a great job and everyone in Shildon Ignite works hard to achieve their project’s aims and are fantastic assets to our community”.
