West Auckland Town welcomed Consett in what is this season’s local derby, 20 miles being the closest team in the NPL East, reports Phil Dodds.
The visitors arrived on the back of a decent season so far, with an established squad at this level, but it was the home side who took the lead when Cieran Jackson scored a stunning goal.
Jackson picked the ball up 25 yards from goal, dinked it over a Consett player, and unleashed an unstoppable shot that flew past the Consett keeper for the first half’s only goal.
However, Consett found an equaliser on the hour mark through Isaac Walker, but just three minutes later, Fin ‘Gorman headed in his sixth league goal of the season to give West the win.
Another game followed on Tuesday evening when Hallam were the visitors.
Whilst Hallam sat bottom of the league, West Auckland manager, Gareth Young was conscious that his team could not be complacent or underestimate the visitors.
The night proved to be a very confident and comfortable display.
West took the lead after 7 minutes through a James Harrison goal.
The hosts then scored a further two goals before the interval; a bundled in effort from Fin ‘Gorman, before Cieran Jackson, notched his fourth goal in as many games.
Cobi Jones increased West’s lead two minutes after the restart, and that was followed by torrential rain which affected the rest of the second half.
Hallam did pull a goal back on 51 minutes, but West increased the lead once more when Ben Trotter got the home side’s 5th goal of the game.
It was another fantastic performance, which saw West move to 8th in the league table ahead of a trip to Garforth Town on Saturday before hosting Liversedge the following weekend.
