This month heralded the 90th birthday of well known and much loved retired Shildon business woman, Mary Prestedge. She was surprised last week with a gathering in the Masonic Hall of well over 100 family members and friends from the local community, who came together to celebrate her wonderful milestone.
Mary and her husband Stan (who died in 2003) moved to Shildon in the 1960’s to open Shildon Fisheries in Church Street. They soon took the town and its people to heart and successfully served them, some might say, the best fish and chips ever, for nearly four decades. Of course they experienced lots of change in that time, most notably the closure of Shildon Wagon Works, an event that eventually took its toll on the small businesses of the town. After they retired from the shop, Mary and Stan took over the running of the bar and the kitchen at the Masonic Hall for several more years.
Mary has four daughters, seven grand children and four great grandchildren. Her family extends their love and appreciation for all she has done for them.
Thanks are also extended to all who went to her party and for the many gifts she received. Also to Eric, Christine and John at the Masonic Hall who helped make her party a great success.
