MayorCouncillor Colin Race was chosen as the 8th Mayor of Bishop Auckland at the Town Council’s Annual Meeting, held on Tuesday 27th May.

Colin, who was born in Bishop Auckland, said that it was a great honour to be elected and announced that his chosen charity would be the Alzheimer’s Society, which works to improve the quality of life for people affected by dementia.

“My aim is not just to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause, but also to raise awareness of the issues and contribute locally to the dementia challenge,” he commented.

Councillor Lee Brownson was elected Deputy Mayor.

Paying tribute to the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Dave Fleming, Colin said, “Dave has done a great job as Mayor over the last year, supporting many local events, building partnerships with organisations to benefit Bishop Auckland and also raising the profile of the town in the region”.

Councillor Fleming raised £1,400 for the Butterwick Hospice during his term in office, and presented a cheque to Beryl Anderson, fundraiser at the Hospice, on 30th May.
