A passion for the humble jacket potato has inspired former plasterer Andrew Morgan to embark on a new career, opening Morgan’s, a family-run café on Fore Bondgate in Bishop Auckland.

Founded by Andrew and run alongside his wife Sara and daughter Paige, Morgan’s is built around a simple idea: bringing the traditional jacket potato back into the spotlight.

Originally from Spennymoor, Andrew is proud to be starting his new venture in a place that holds childhood memories.

“I remember coming to Fore Bondgate as a child and now to be here on this new venture makes me very proud,” said Andrew. “The jacket potato is a hearty, simple meal that a lot of working-class people can relate to, and I want to put it back in the limelight.”

With its roots stretching back thousands of years to South America, the potato has become a much-loved staple around the world. In the UK, the baked potato has long offered an affordable, filling and warming meal, particularly for working communities.

Andrew spotted an opportunity to bring this timeless favourite to the local high street, with Morgan’s putting the jacket potato firmly at the heart of its menu.

The café’s specialist potato oven can bake up to 25 large potatoes an hour, keeping them warm and ready to serve. Customers can choose from a selection of fillings, salads, sauces, and toppings to create their perfect spud.

Alongside its signature jacket potatoes, Morgan’s also serves barista-made coffee, paninis, fresh salads and protein bowls, offering something for a range of tastes and appetites.

With family at its heart and a much-loved British classic on the menu, Morgan’s is inviting Bishop Auckland residents and visitors alike to rediscover the simple pleasure of a perfectly baked potato.
