Last weekend, Locomotion hosted the 37th model railway Autumn Exhibition, organised by Shildon Model Railway Club. With over 40 traders and model railway layouts for people to see and enjoy, the museum was a hive of activity. And as well as organising the event, the Model Railway Club also had a number of intricate displays that wowed the visiting crowd.
The group, which has been running for over 40 years, is a growing team with an impressive range of skills needed to create layouts. Planning and building layouts require expertise in electronics, joinery, metalwork, artwork for back scenes, the installation of DCC components, photography and of course knowledge of the fascinating history of both local and national railways. All work together to create the award-winning magnificent displays that captivated visitors from all over the UK.
Shildon Model Railway Club chairman, Rob Sowerby said: ”Although it does take a lot of organising to bring all the vendors and displays here, as the set up time for the displays can take up to four hours on each different set, it’s all worth it when we have such good footfall. Approximately 4,500 visitors of all ages, from enthusiasts to first time attendees enjoyed the displays.”
Stafford Railway Circle were delighted to be presented with the trophy plaque for the best display, St Seeb, designed by Colin Postlethwaite.
Colin said: “It’s fantastic to be recognised for all our hard work. This particular design, St Seeb, is based on a small North West town. Most buildings have been fitted with internal lighting and there are various cameo scenes with the local fire brigade in action along with a busy market scene.
“This is a great event to attend in such a wonderful venue with these magnificent trains both life size and replicated in miniature. The turnout has been amazing with people travelling far and wide to come to Shildon to see these fantastic displays.
“I have to mention our thanks to Shildon’s residents and the club for being so welcoming and we can’t wait to come back in March.”
