Miners Banners readied for annual pre-gala parade

Durham Miners Gala will be taking place this year, as tradition dictates, on 13 July, the second Saturday of the month.

For Ferryhill Miners Banner Committee this means they can once again prepare for the much-loved annual Miners Banner parades through the town, which Ferryhill Town Council helps to facilitate.

The previous evening, Friday 12 July at 7pm, the Dean & Chapter banner will lead the parade, accompanied by Ferryhill Town Band and the Mainsforth Colliery banners.

The parade takes the banners from the Aged Miners Homes at Dean Bank to Ferryhill Market Place.

On Gala morning, at 8am, it will be the turn of the Mainsforth Colliery banners to lead the parade, accompanied by the Town Band and the Dean & Chapter banners, from the Surtees Arms public house along to the former Eldon Arms public house.

Road closures will be in force for the duration of the parades, using stewards from Hatton Traffic Management, local police (subject to availability) and overseen by AH Events.

Following the Saturday morning parade at Ferryhill Station, the banners will be transported to Durham City for the Gala.

A bus has been arranged to pick up outside the former Eldon Arms from 8.30am. For more information and to book a place on the bus, contact Peter Atkinson on 07900 702330.
