During the Town Council meeting in April, Mayor Councillor Shirley Quinn, presented Beverley Watkins with her Mayors Award.
Beverley has been a devoted volunteer, assisting and leading numerous young people in skills at the weekly Scouts Groups.
She was introduced to the scouting world as a child as both parents were leaders for a local group.
Brian Ellis, Beverley’s father, was a scout himself, achieving a range of awards.
Beverley grew up through the sections, just like her dad, and following in his footsteps became a Beaver Leader at the age of sixteen.
Beverley’s whole family have been involved in the Scout movement including her two daughters.
Following her father’s death, Beverley was determined to keep his legacy and ensured the Scouts Group remained in Shildon.
To date, Beverley is Group Scout Master and Beaver Master for the Shildon B-P Group.
The groups are well attended and have seen several generations gain skills and experiences that they may never have learned.
This vast amount of knowledge will remain with them throughout their lives.
Like Beverley, there are many leaders who have gone through all the sections, some are children of previous scouts.
Scouting will always be in Beverley’s family, and she hopes that the Scout movement continues and thrives as well as making opportunities for all children going forward in the future.
The weekly sessions are on a Friday evening between 6-8pm, held in the Methodist Church Hall.
