Mayor shortlisted for Volunteer of the Year award

Ferryhill’s serving town mayor, Carole Atkinson, was one of three people nominated for Volunteer of the Year 2024 at this year’s prestigious County Durham Together Awards, sponsored by the Northern Echo.

Carole is involved with many groups in and around Ferryhill. Amongst others, she is a governor at Ferryhill Secondary School, Chairperson of the Ferryhill branch of the Royal British Legion, and along with many other ladies has been involved in decorating Ferryhill with knitted poppies.

She is Chairperson of Mainsforth Welfare Community Centre, a trustee of Endeavour Woodcrafts, a twice weekly volunteer at Ferryhill Foodbank. and is a volunteer with the Miners Banner Group.

Somehow Carole also finds time to hold various events raising money for her nominated charities in Ferryhill, and also helps out at a local Caring and Sharing group.

“I have no idea who nominated me,” said Carole, “but it was lovely to be nominated. I have worked alongside some amazing people who are the heart and soul of Ferryhill.”

Carole did not win the award but was extremely proud to take part and represent all that is good in Ferryhill.
