Carole and Peter Atkinson married on 4th December 1962 at Durham Registry Office.
Peter was born in Spennymoor whilst Carol was born in Shincliffe.

The couple met at Smart & Browns, – now known as Thorn Lighting – where they both worked. After they were married, they moved to Church Street, Ferryhill Station where they lived for 15 years, before moving to their current address in Stratford Gardens.

Peter was a member of Fishburn Colliery Band moving to Ferryhill Town Band where he had been a member for 30 years before retiring.

Both Peter and Carole are both active members of the Ferryhill Banner group. Carole is a keen crafter and so far she has croqueted 5,500 poppies for Remembrance Sunday. Her pride and joy is a long dress made from poppies, which is on display in Ferryhill Library.

Carole is also Chair of Ferryhill Branch of The British Legion and is involved with the Food Bank on every Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Peter was Mayor in 2012 and 2016, whereas Carole is the currently undertaking the role. They have a son, Wayne and a daughter, Nicola, two grandchildren and a great grandchild on the way.

Cllr John Lamb presented the couple with a beautiful bouquet of flowers when they returned home from a family holiday in Las Vegas.
