Letter: Tracing Arthur Douglas Horner family

Dear Editor,

Arthur Douglas Horner was born on 4th January 1919 in Spennymoor, the eldest child of Silas Horner and Annie (nee Barker) who had married in 1915.

He had a younger sister, Eunice Isobel Horner who was born 14th August 1930.

In 1939 the family lived at 74 High Street Spennymoor. Sadly, Arthur was killed in action on 27th October 1944 in Holland and is buried in the war cemetery in Overloon.

Arthur’s sister, Eunice, married John Robinson in 1954 and they had 3 children, Ian, Dorothy and Peter. Eunice passed away in 2018.

My reason for giving you these details is that I am trying to trace any descendants/relatives of the family of Arthur.

I am just one of a number of people who is helping Overloon War Chronicles to put faces to the names of those interred in Overloon War Cemetery by first obtaining photos and secondly trying to tell ‘their story’ something like a short biographies.

More can be seen at www.overloonwarchronicles.nl to further explain the group project. There are 281 graves in the War Cemetery in Overloon and so far 197 photos have been found and their biographies are works in progress.

I should add that I have no connection to Arthur, he is one of the soldiers that I have volunteered to research. I live in Swansea and did a short biography with photos for my late mother-in-law’s brother, Hubert Raymond Perrins which is included on the Overloon Chronicles website.

I am hoping to enlist your help to see if there is anyone in the area who has either a photo or can give more information on Arthur so that ‘his story’ can be told.

Thank you in anticipation,
Jane Hope, janehope-2008[@]hotmail[.]co[.]uk.
