Approach Too would like to say a big thank you to Suzie from Dog’s Trust for the assemblies and workshops this week for children at Ferryhill and West Cornforth Primary Schools.
Glenys from Approach Too said, “Suzie’s advice and information to children about staying safe around dogs were great. Children can often assume that other dogs will behave in the same way as their own dog. It is important that they understand that all dogs are different and that we can’t tell if dogs are friendly based on how they look.”
Lesson 1: Always ask the owner’s permission before touching their dog.
Lesson 2: If they say yes, stand calmly and quietly with your arms by your side and wait patiently for the dog to approach you, then stroke the dogs side or shoulder gently.
Lesson 3: Walk away calmly if the dog moves away at during the meeting.
Lesson 4: Keep calm if a dog jumps up at you. Cross your arms, turn and look away. If you get knocked over, curl up and cover your head with your arms until an adult comes to help.
