A driver who knocked down a 9-year-old girl on Byerley Road has been arrested and bailed.
“Police were alerted by the ambulance service to a collision at 8.30am on Saturday (12 August) between a pedestrian and a car,” said a spokesperson for Durham Constabulary. “The incident happened on Byerley Road in Shildon, and involved a young girl and a blue Toyota, which left the scene of the collision.
“The girl was taken to hospital with what were believed to be superficial injuries. A 28-year-old man was arrested by police a short time later and taken to police custody. He has since been released on bail while further enquiries are carried out.”
Meanwhile, the young victim’s mother thanked the community for their support in the aftermath of the incident. “Following a hit and run accident on Saturday which involved my 9-year old-daughter, I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us,” she said.
“Thank you for all the wonderfully kind gestures and gifts. I’d really like to reach out and give a huge thanks to the gentleman who stopped and dialled 999 and stayed with us. We will be ever grateful.
