Do You Have a Chilton Ghost Story? As the nights draw in and Halloween approaches, Chilton & Windlestone Our Heritage at the Pavilion is looking to unearth the town’s most spine-chilling local legends, eerie encounters, and unexplained mysteries.

Whether it is phantom footsteps in an old terrace, a strange sighting near the old collieries, or a spooky family tale passed down through generations, we want to hear it! We are gathering local accounts to publish a special Book of Ghost Stories for Christmas reviving the grand Victorian tradition of sharing unsettling tales around the fireside during the festive season.

Are the old legends true? Our area has long been steeped in eerie lore, from whispers of spectral figures and a “Grey Lady” haunting the grounds of nearby Windlestone Hall, to unexplainable occurrences around Chilton’s historic industrial and mining spots.

Every town has its hidden secrets—perhaps your own home or a street you walk down every day holds a mystery that has never been written down. We want to capture those personal, uniquely Chilton encounters before they are forgotten.

To launch this project, we are hosting a special storytelling drop-in event on Saturday 31 October from 2pm to 4pm at the Chilton Heritage Centre at the Pavilion.

This is a wonderful opportunity to share your stories directly with fellow community members, swap spooky experiences, and enjoy a chat over a warm drink. Come along to chat with the heritage team, grab a coffee, and tell us your story. If you have written your story down, you can hand it in on the day. If you prefer just to talk, our volunteers will be on hand to write your memories down for you.

Every story submitted will be considered for our upcoming festive book. This project is a fantastic way to connect our community’s history with local folklore, celebrating Chilton’s unique heritage in a fun, creative way.

If you cannot make it to the Pavilion on Halloween, you can still submit your spooky tales or find out more by contacting Sue Reece at cllrsreece[@]chiltondurham-tc[.]gov[.]uk.

Don’t let Chilton’s ghosts remain hidden in the shadows—help us preserve our town’s spooky history for generations to come
