Golden day for Arthur and Christine

Mayor Shirley Quinn presents Christine and Arthur Thornton with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the town.

Shildon Town Mayor, Cllr Shirley Quinn, visited Arthur & Christine Thornton recently on the occasion of their golden wedding celebrations.

The couple celebrated 50 years of marriage on 16 February and the mayor was on hand to present them with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the town.

Christine, originally from Busselton, met Arthur whilst working in Armitage’s shoe shop in Maddison Street and Arthur worked as a riveter at Shildon Shops.

They were married at All Saints Church and held their reception at New Shildon Club surrounded by family and friends.

Their wedding, however, did have to be brought forward half an hour so that Rev Cavanagh could attend the Newcastle match later in the day.

They have lived in Shildon all of their married life and have three children and six grandchildren they dote on.
