Ferryhill School Year 10 lift Shield after dramatic penalty shootout

Ferryhill School Year 10 with the Ben Potts Memorial Shield after seeing off Durham Johnstone in the final.

The Year 10 football team from Ferryhill School celebrated a remarkable victory in the Ben Potts Memorial Shield after defeating a strong opposition side in a thrilling final that ended 2-2 before being decided by penalties.

The prestigious inter-schools tournament has been played since 1910 and Ferryhill School Year 10 is now part of its history.

The success is the result of four years of hard work, dedication and commitment from a talented group of players who have grown together as a team throughout their time at Ferryhill School.

Their excellent teamwork, togetherness and determination have been key factors in their achievements, and these qualities were on full display during the final.

To get there, the team had to see off Wolsingham, King James and Woodham in their semi-final before facing Durham Johnstone, who had already beaten them once this season as well as in last year’s League Cup final.

Facing that very strong opponent, the Ferryhill School side produced an outstanding performance.

The game was fiercely contested from start to finish, with both teams showing great quality and determination.

However, the Ferryhill players matched their opponents every step of the way, working tirelessly for one another and demonstrating tremendous character under pressure.

At the final whistle, the score stood at 2-2, setting up a dramatic penalty shootout to decide the destination of the cup. With confidence and composure, the Ferryhill School players stepped up and converted their penalties before celebrating victory as they lifted the trophy.

Every member of the squad played their part in the success, leaving everything on the pitch and refusing to give up.

Their commitment and resilience reflected the values that have helped them develop into a successful team over the past four years.

This tournament triumph is a fitting reward for a special group of young footballers whose hard work and dedication have paid off.

The victory will be remembered as a proud moment for both the players and Ferryhill School, highlighting what can be achieved through teamwork, perseverance and belief.
