Ex-footballer gives dog fouling the red card

Irresponsible dog owners who allow their pets to foul on playing fields and football pitches are being shown the red card. Durham County Council has teamed up with Durham City Football Club and Durham County Football Association for a month-long campaign, which began on 5th February.

Olivier Bernard, former Newcastle United player and owner of Durham City Football Club, is backing the campaign, which was launched in response to public feedback which highlighted that dog fouling on playing fields and pitches is a particular concern to residents, including in Shildon.

Mr Bernard said, “I am very pleased to be supporting this campaign. Children have a right to play in clean and safe areas which are free from dog mess.”

The campaign will target 15 specific areas across County Durham, including Shildon Jubilee Recreation Ground.

Neighbourhood wardens will be on patrol in this area and those who fail to clean up after their pet will be issued with £80 fixed penalty notices.

Free dog microchipping, provided in partnership with Stray Aid and Stray Action, will also be available at Jubilee Fields Community Centre on Saturday 22nd February, from 10am until 2pm.
