An 83-year-old cycling veteran from Houghton-le-Spring has today set off on an extraordinary mission to become a world record holder while raising vital funds for County Durham’s St Cuthbert’s Hospice.
Eddie McGourley began the iconic Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge this morning, aiming to become the fastest octogenarian ever to complete the gruelling 1,000-mile ride across the UK.
Riding alongside his friend Stephen Foster, 71, the pair have a combined age of 154 and are aiming to arrive at John O’Groats on 8 July.
Eddie is leveraging his record-breaking attempt to raise vital funds for St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham. The challenge carries immense personal significance for Eddie as Winifred, Eddie’s late wife, spent her final days at the hospice.
Eddie commented:
“The hospice did a lot for us both, and this was the only way I could think to try and give them something back.”
He mentioned he was in Washington Library and saw a Guinness Book of Records, where an idea sparked in his mind. When he saw the current record was 14 days, he thought to himself, I can beat that.
“I’ve spent a lifetime in the saddle, but this is undoubtedly the most meaningful ride of my life. It’s not just about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible at 83; it’s about using this platform to rally support and raise as much money as possible for St Cuthbert’s Hospice. The care and dignity they provide to our community is invaluable, and every mile Stephen and I pedal will be fuelled by that mission.”
With the grand depart at Land’s End officially underway today, Eddie and Stephen’s mission to deliver a world record and vital funding for St Cuthbert’s Hospice is officially in motion. This challenge is being supported by Durham Freemason’s, whose credo is “stronger together”.
