Saturday 2nd September saw the sun shine down on the first Chilton Day and with it brought success, writes Chilton Town Clerk, John Robinson.
Working together, the Gala Committee and the Town Council combined the former Gala and Show into our first Chilton Day, celebrating life here in the town. The Gala had its usual visit from the Roman re-enactment group along with Eskafeld, a Mediaeval re-enactment group. Both were well received by the crowd.
Mr Paul Jackson as usual organised the Classic Car Rally, bringing some beautiful cars to the town. In the Show, over 500 entries across art, handicraft, photography, baking, floral art and children’s classes gave a wonderful insight into our community. The children produced some excellent drawings, cards and handwriting – thank you to Chilton Academy for their support.
The first Chilton Dog Show saw over 40 entries in the various classes from waggiest tail, dog most like its owner, to dog the judge would like to take home. Thanks to Sedgefield MP, Paul Howell, who joined the judges to pick the Supreme Champion Dog and Reserve.
The funfair was well supported by the young people, many surviving the bucking bronco. Mayor Malpas raised a considerable amount for her chosen charity, the Great North Air Ambulance Service through her raffle and stall. A big, big thank you also goes to Dere Street Homes, who sponsored the show prizes.
Cllr Kieran Hornsby, Chair of Chilton Town Council Community Committee said: “We were delighted with the support given to us by many groups and individuals in Chilton. Thank you to everyone who entered the show and took part in any way. Thanks to the police, NERAMS and to Paul Howell MP for coming along and supporting us.
“My biggest thanks must go to my fellow Councillors and office staff, with a huge thanks to the Chilton Gala Committee for a great end to the summer holidays. We are now all looking forward to Childon Day 2024.”
